Current Perspective
Context and objectives:
Video gaming is a common pastime among young people in modern culture, and for the most part, it is a safe pastime. However, there has been the awareness in recent years that excessive video gaming can cause severe functional disability and psychological distress in a significant minority of players. Esports is a form of competitive video gaming. It is a relatively recent phenomenon that has attracted a sizable following worldwide and has developed into a multibillion-dollar industry. The aim of this briefing paper is to look at the current state of esports around the world and the implications for public health.
Methods:
A non-systematic analysis was carried out. Information was gathered and presented as game genres, effect types and magnitudes, popularity, fiscal impact in monetary terms, government participation, and public health consequences using data from the Internet and PubMed.
Results:
While there are many types of esports, there is no simple categorization of game genres. Many competitions with large prize pools have been organised by gaming companies around the world, and some of these events have received government funding. There was no research available on the health consequences of esports.
Discussion and conclusions:
The majority of the information sources came from commercial environments, and none of them declared any conflicts of interest, which might lead to a skewed picture of the current situation. When gaming becomes more common under the banner of esports, It seems fair to predict a rise in problematic gaming and, as a result, a rise in the incidence of gaming disorder and dangerous gaming. It is a major public health issue that the need for recovery services for gaming addiction/disorder is growing in various countries around the world. There is a need for more empirically based research on this topic.
